It's Time to Turn the Great Pyramid a Little
When the ancient Egyptians built the Great Pyramid,
they oriented it to the unique star in their night skys that never moved. Unlike you, they had no clear idea why the star
never moved, but the did know it was special, and they built their massive pyramid to align with it.
But times have changed astronomically. The Earth has
wobbled a little bit, and the axis of the planet no longer points exactly the same way it did. Now, the Egyptian North Star
is out of date - it moves. Our North Star (astronomers call it Polaris) is the one that is in direct line with the axis and
appears frozen in the sky. It takes thousands of years, but the Earth wobbles on its axis like a slowing top. Today, the axis
points almost directly at Polaris (the new, happening North Star). But Thuban was the fixed star for the ancients, and Cepheus
will be the North Star in 1,000 years or so. The "tip" of the Earth's axis traces a circle through the night sky every 26,000
years, as new North Stars come and (very slowly) go.
